● dr hab. Anna Kulma, professor, head of the Laboratory of Genetic Biochemistry The main stream of my scientific interests is the biotechnological improvement of the functional properties of crops, learning about bioactive compounds in products obtained from them and determining the possibility of their use, mainly in medicine. Since 2006, I have been conducting research aimed at studying the role of secondary metabolites in the response of flax to fusariosis. The subject of increasing plant resistance is important because fungal diseases of flax cause significant losses in its crops and thus contribute to the decline in interest in growing this valuable plant. In recent years, these studies have focused on the role of molecules formed by the enzymatic and non-enzymatic degradation of carotenoids, in particular volatile compounds and hormones (ABA, strigolactones) in the interactions of flax with pathogens. The added value in the case of manipulating the level of secondary metabolites is obtaining plants with increased resistance and, at the same time, increased potential for application, which directly results in the second current of my research interests, regarding the identification of compounds with potential medical use in flax products, including those traditionally considered waste, such as chaff linen.
